Kinder Class Information

A little about me...
My name is Sylvia Rodriguez and I am OLPH Academy’s Kindergarten teacher. I am so proud to be a part of such an amazing school. Just to share a little about myself, I am originally from Lyford, Texas but moved to Corpus Christi in 2007. I attended the University of Texas Pan-American and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood education. I am certified to teach in an Early Childhood classroom.
What is my classroom experience...
I have been a teacher for 24 years and have taught Kindergarten, first and second grade. The first seventeen years of my teaching career were in public education and the last seven years have been in Catholic education. I began
teaching in 1997 at Weslaco ISD as a Kindergarten teacher and also taught at Lyford CISD and Flour Bluff ISD. I have taught at OLPH Academy for the last 7 years. Every year as a school teacher has been a wonderful blessing.
What I strive to teach the children in my classroom...

I truly and faithfully believe that young children need to know who they are in Christ and what they believe as Catholic Christians. As their teacher, I fully commit myself to teaching my students, first and foremost, that they are truly loved by God.
How I incorporate faith and religion in our classroom...
They know their prayers and we pray together. They learn Sacred Scripture through a variety of religion lessons and activities which helps them understand their faith. We celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass together during
the school liturgy. They know about the saints and the example they showed inliving holy lives. They have a basic understanding of the sacraments and the importance of forgiveness. I believe that all these components help my studentsstay grounded in their faith and help them grow as followers and disciples of Christ. Our Religion curriculum provides students many ways to learn about our faith and deepen their relationship with Jesus.
What does our day in Kindergarten look like...
Our day in Kindergarten is a very productive one. We stay pretty busy. Our class motto is “Give Jesus Your Best”. We start off with our morning meeting in which we review skills learned and discuss what our day will look like. The students go to P.E. in the morning and get their exercise. Religion and language arts are our morning subjects. For Religion, we use a wonderful resource called, “God Loves Us” and for Language Arts we use the “Superkids” curriculum. Math and science orsocial studies happen in the afternoon. For Math, we use “Go Math” and for
Science, we use “Science Fusion”. “ Studies Weekly” is our Social Studies resource. We also use “Friendzy” which is an amazing resource used to help students social/emotional learning and development.
What are my classroom expectations...
My students know that each day is an opportunity to give our very best to God. Expectations in Kindergarten are high and my students work hard everyday. They understand that it is OK if they don’t know how to do something. We work
together and help each other rise. As a teacher, it is very important for my students to know that I wholeheartedly care about their future.
What are my parent expectations...

Communication with parents is vital. Parents are an integral part of our learning. I use emails, Google Classroom and Bloomz to let my parents know what is happening in our classroom.
What is my classroom philosophy...

I believe that love and acceptance makes my classroom a special place to learn. For many students Kindergarten is their first experience in their education. I want them to know that in my classroom they are loved and cared for above anything else. Our class theme is “Jesus is our Superhero”. My students know that Jesus is at the center of our lives.
